Sri N.S.SUBBA RAO, M.A., Bar-at-Law,Vice-Chancellor,University of Mysore

I am glad to hear that the Hindu Theological High School is going to celebrate its Golden Jubilee. I had the honour of presiding over the school day some years ago and in that connection was brought into touch with the remarkable work that this School is doing. I wish the school and its Staff every success in the coming years. It is such schools as this that will be expected to send out leaders for the country, and it is only they that can effectively meet the demand made upon them.

Sir K.V.REDDI, B.A.,B.L.,M.L.C.,Vice-Chancellor,Annamalai University,Chidambaram

I am exceedingly glad to learn that the Golden Jubilee of the Hindu Theological High School is to be celebrated in August. This School has been consistently doing good work for a number of Years .The boys are well-behaved. The Staff is efficient. The School is in the heart of the city and has been serving an exceedingly useful purpose. I wish your Jubilee celebrations every success.

BY THE HONBLE MR,JUSTICES P.VENKATARAMNNA RAO

NAIDU, B.A.,B.L.

It is with a mixed feeling of pleasure and pride that I respond to the invitation of the Secretary, Golden Jubilee Souvenir Committee, to send a message on the occasion of the celebration of the Golden Jubilee of the Hindu Theological High School where I had my early schooling.  It was founded by the illustrious savant, Sivasankara Pandyajee, in a spirit of revolt to checkmate a serious danger, that he and many others at that time believed in, to the Indian youth from the proselytising influence of the education imparted in some of the then existing missionary schools.  He was a brilliant product of western education .  He was a genuine patriot filled with earnestness and zeal to adapt and apply the western system of education to the needs of Indian youth and to develop it on truly national lines so as to bring out all that is best in India's cultural genius.  He, in short , wanted the education of Indian youth to be Indian in outlook.  With untiring devotion, boundless energy and unflagging enthusiasm he set  to work to organize and found as institution where his ideals could be worked out.  Alongside the secular education to be imparted according to then prevailing system, he insisted on religious education being imparted-not the orthodox tenets of this or that particular sect but the broad, catholic, liberal and ennobling precepts of the Hindu religion which in its fundamentals is all-embracing and universal, appealing to every human soul to whatever creed or race or nationality he may belong.  He, with considerable labour and skill, selected extracts from the "Ramayana, the Mahabharatha, the Bhagavad Gita and several other religious works and printed books suitable to very class from the Infant Standard up to the Matriculation Class.  It was made compulsory for every student to purchase them.  Religious instruction became a part of the curriculum.  He realised the significance of personality in the work of education-personality of the teacher and the personality of the taught. The one was as necessary as the other.  The aim of education above all is the unfolding the development of the pupil's personality and it depends upon the personality of the teacher.  He collected a band of teachers and tries by his own example to exemplify this ideal.  In everything he did, he strove to infuse the ideal of Gurukula so far as possible, consistent with the conditions of the age.  During the early years of the School he spared neither time nor trouble nor energy in placing the institution on a secure basis.  He took a paternal interest in the institution and its students.  His influence was so dominant and all-pervasive that the most vivid recollection I have of the School is his vigorous personality and his pugree.  Among the teachers who were associated with Founder in his task of building up the institution was one Mr. Nana Tawker, short and stocky with a fair complexion and a smiling face.  He had the reputation of being a clever teacher in History besides being popular.

The foundations which the Founder laid and the ideals which he sought to implant were such that the institution weathered many a storm, and I am glad to say that it is now on a secure, steady and stable foundation, thanks to the noble band of teachers, especially during the last ten years, under the able guidance of Mr. K. Rangaswami Aiyangar, its present Head Master, who has dedicated his life to this institution, making it the centre of, and inspiration for, his work.  I have been in touch in recent years with the progress  of the School and every effort is made to make it a model school and it has come to be recognised as one of the few best institutions in South India.  Anybody who goes through the Annual Reports and cares to pay a visit to the institution, will be convinced of this.  We are passing through critical times.  Everything old has been changing and yielding place to new.  Traditional policies are being reversed and, in the place of what was considered as safe and secure in every field of thought and action, doubt and confusion have come into play, particularly in the field of education.  It will be many years before a settled policy and system of education are going to be evolved for this country, but, whatever they may be, this institution has been so developed that it will be able to adapt itself to any environment it will find itself in.  The ideals of the Founder have been kept up, and education is being imparted with a view not only to equip the pupil with the necessary training to enable him to earn his living but also to value education for its own sake and thus to enlarge and humanise his outlook.  One thing I wish to emphasise about the institution is the spirit of service that pervades it.  One of the Prime Ministers of England , Stanely  HBaldwin, speaking at Leeds Luncheon Club in 1925,is reported to have said :

"One of the sources of the great strength of our country in every part of the kingdom is that there are men who have no personal ambition for themselves to get where the limelight is brightest and publicity is greatest.  And as long as our country can go on producing that type which.   I am thankful to say, it is producing from all classes of the community-so long as that is the case, I should never despair of England."
I wish I could say this of our country without meaning any reflection on anybody who is working for its salvation.  I am happy to note that this institution is worked in this spirit and the pupils go out of the School with that spirit fully implanted in them.
On the Occasion of the Golden Jubilee, I , as an Old Boy of the School,  send my heartiest felicitations and fervently pray to God and ask every one of the Old Boys to join with me in offering this prayer that this Institution under His benign and fostering care will prosper and play its part in moulding the destinies  of the Indian youth that come under its care in the years to come!

Sri S.SATYAMURTHI, B.A., B.L., M.L.A. (Central), Mayor of Madras

A Golden Jubilee is a proud landmark in the life of an institution, and the Hindu Theological High School has a briliant record of educational work to its credit. I have great pleasure in sending you my best wishes for the success of the function and the continued and increasing usefulness of the school.

Rao Bahadur Dr.T.S.TIRUMURTHI, Principal , Stanley Medical College, Madras

The fame of the Hindu Theological High School has spread far and wide as amodel High School, Where the education which is imparted is not lop-sided but where every attempt is being made to develop the personality of the child as a whole-physical, mental ,moral and religious. I know of no other institution where the teachers work so whole-heartedly  and enthusiastically and co-operate with the Head Master in his great enterprise , in the true spirit of devotion to the noble teaching profession.

I wish the Golden Jubilee Commitee every success in its attempts to celebrate the Jubilee in a fitting and appropriate manner.

Modesty of the teaching staff has hid the light of the school under the bushel. I hope the occasion of the Golden Jubilee will be availed of to broadcast the splendid work which it has been hitherto doing and to attract the noice of the wealthy and charitable public in order that many of the pressing wants of the schools may be satisfied with their financial aid.

Professor D.S.SARMA, M.A., Principal, Pachaiyappa's College , Madras

Without exaggeration, i may say that i have always felt that this school is one of the ideal institutions after my own heart. If all our Hindu Schools follow in the footsteps of the Hindu Theological High School and the Ramakrishna Student's Home and if all our colleges which call themselves Hindu or national assimilate something of their spirit, the modern Indian Renaissance may be said to have fulfilled itself on the educational side. I wish your institution long life and prosperity.

Rev . A. J. BOYD, M.A., Principal, Madras Christian College

I am very interested to hear that the Golden Jubilee of the Hindu Theological High School is to be celebrated in August, and i am glad to send my best wishes to the school on this occasion. As your Head Master reminded us when i visited you last march, the Hindu Theological High Schoolbegan its existence as a rival of the christian college. In these days, however , the two institutions are not rivals but good neighbours of each other, and i wish the Hindu Theological High School  a long and prosperous and useful life.

Miss K. N. BROCKWAY , M. A., Principal , St. Christopher's Training College, Madras

It is with great pleasure that i write to congratulate that Hindu Theological High School on the occasion of its Golden Jubilee. It is all too easy for teacher to be concerned merely with the narrow field of instruction, but the example of the Staff of this school reminds us that teachers should be interested in every aspect of the lives of their pupils as well as in questions concerning the status of the teaching profession as a whole. I unite with the many friends of the school in congratulating it on its past achievement and in wishing it a still more glorious future.

Dr.G. S. ARUNDALE, M.A., LL.D., Adyar, Madras

I send my very best wishes to the Hindu Theological High School of Madras on the occasion of its attaining the dignity of a Golden Jubilee.

The fact that the founder of the school was a prominent Theosophist of his time naturally draws the school nearer to me, and i am informed that the president-founder of the Theosophical Society visited the institution and recorded in highly appreciative terms his approval of its work. I known that the school is very highly respected and that its staff is characterised by a very sincere devotion to the well-being of the school.

His Highness RAJAH BHASKARA SETUPATI , Maharajah of Ramnad

I visited the Institution and i must say that it speaks volumes for Mr.Sivasankara Pandyaji's able efforts in trying to give the Indians youths religious and moral education side by side with that education that makes tham fit members of this university. Seeing the short period within which the institution was started, the improvements and arrangements seem marvellous. I wish the Instution and Mr.Pandyaji all success.

Mr.BERTRAM KEIGHTLEY, M. A., Bar-at-Law, London

The work accomplished by the school seems to be deserving of every encouragement, and its founder, Mr. Sivasanakra Pandyaji, has merited the lasting gratitude of his fellow-countrymen. I have been struck by the intelligence of the boys and the ability shown in devising the system of religious and ethical training adopted.

Sri S. SATHYAMURTI, B.A., B.L., M.L.A., Mayor of Madras

The report of the school and of its work has travelled far beyond its precincts. The reality , as i have seen it, has fully justified my expectations. It gives me great pleasure to observe the discipline that prevails here and the bright and the healthy appearance of the boys. There is here evidence of an atmosphere of sweetness, love and respect.Such an atmosphere cannot be created for an afternoon. It is the culmination of a series of mental, moral and spiritual exercises of the staff, led by a great Head Master.                                                                                                                                                           (1933)

The great fame which the school has won, fills me with joy. I sense in this place the presence of divinity. Were i the monarch of the land, I would straightway build for this institution a spacious structure and provide the entire wherewithal for its growth and expansion. If there is one sincere soul, he can evoke enthusiasm and kindle the flame of love in the hearts of thousands. Such men are rare. Here in this school, i find one such great soul in the person of Sri K.Rangaswami Aiyangar.                                                                                                                                                                  (1940)

Sir Alladi KRISHNASWAMI  AIYAR ,   B.A.,  B.L.,  Advocate- General , Madras

I am glad to find here a noble spirit animating the teachers. That spirit has permeated the whole school .The spirit of service and sacrifice manisfested here is worthy of being copied by other institutions. In the matter of maintaining order and discipline, the school has set an example which serves as an object-lesson to many an assembly of elders. The teachers, by dint of their hard and caseless work and by the spirit of fraternity which they have been displaying in recent years, have raised the status of the school in public estimation. The Head  Master has dedicated his life to the school. He studiously avoids the lime-light, but his influence is felt throughout. He  has a magnetic personality and is able to infect others with his enthusiasm. He resembles in many respects the great Dr.Arnold of Rugby. I congratulate the Sschool on having him as its Head Master.(1933)

There is not a single boy or teacher of this school who does not feel that he is engaged in the common task of service to the motherland. That spirit is write large in everything that is done here. I am not in the least exaggerating when i say that it would do good to professor and principals of colleges and Vice-Chancellors of Universities to go on a pilgrimage to this institution and study its working.                                                                                                                                    (1939)

Sri  SANKARACHARYA  SWAMIJI  of Dwaraka  Peetam

I am glad to have visited this National Institution. It will, I am sure, be the nucleus of a university for the revival of Sanatana Dharma.                                                                                                                                                       (1933)

Dr. A. LAKSHMANASWAMI  MUDALIAR,  B.A.,  M.D., Principal, Medical College, Madras

I have long cherished the desire to acquaint myself with this school in which pupils and teachers have been working in harmony. The teachers of the school have, by their co-operation and sacrifice, produced a profound impression on all and command great respect. The school is striving to realise the highest ideal of training students for life and not merely for passing examination. It also inclucates the spirit of service and sacrifice in the minds of youngsters in their impressionable period. As far as i know, this is the only school in south india where the tone and the atmosphere of Eton prevail.                                 (1933)

Dewan Bahadur Sir A. RAMASWAMI MUDLIAR, B.A.,B.L.,Commerce Member,The Viceroy's Executive Council

The Hindu Theological High School is saturated with the spirit of religion. It is bound to play a prominent part in the life of the Hindu Community of our presidency.I hope that the pupils who are trained in this great national institution will become missionaries of their faith, go abroad as propagandists, bring glory to themselves and greater glory to their country. I count upon the teachers and pupils of the school to tackle the problem of establishing Hindu Mission in our country.                         (1934)

Late Rev.Father BERTRAM, S. J., Principal, Loyola College, Madras

I am simply amazed and lost in admiration for all that is being done  in this school. I am glad to find that the teachers of the school have not made material consideration their sole concern. They have formed themselves into aa community, a happy joint family .Every act of theirs is an act of devotion and dedication. I am very much pleased to see that the school is keeping very close touch with the parents. I see that the teachers take part in the activities of the Associations and Unions of the students, and mingle with them freely . This phase of their activity shows how devotedthey are to their pupils. They exhibit a commendable spirit of sacrifice rare among teachers.Mr.Rangaswami Aiyangar does not rule by the sheerweight of authority but rather leads his assistants and co-workers by persuasive power, devotion and example.                                          (1935)

Dr.C.R. REDDI, M.A.,  Vice-Chancellor, Andhra University

One can easily see that life in this school is both bright and strenuous and is likely to fit the pupils for the duties of citizenship in an admirable manner. I am exceedingly gratified to find that, in the scheme of religious instruction imparted in the school, emphasis is laid on the universal and humanistic elements of Hinduism. I am glad to note the absence of even a tinge of communalism here. The educational organisation is so good and perfect that i do not find anything in it to criticise. There are no loose parts in it. I may acclaim the school as a model one.Magnificent as are the methods that have been adopted here for general education, far more   important are the steps that are taken to build up the character of pupils. I particularly like the extra-mural activities- excursions, training of  boys in maintaining discipline, in a sense of honour and in self-government,etc. All this is admirable. It is the very philosophy of what school life ought to be.The soul of moral education is the teacher. The teacher of the school are models and patterns to mserve as models. I congratulate the school on having such a staff and also a management which is doing its best to improve the institution in all possible ways.I have learnt a great deal from my visit to the school as to what educational organisation should be and what the life and activities of a national High School ought to be.

Mr.Rangaswami Aiyangar has the courage of his convictions, and lives a life of sacrifice and patriotism, alife so simple , so sincere and so lofty that it is real moral education. It is only under such a Head Master that a school can develop its soul.(1936)

 The Hon'ble Mr.Justice P.VENKATARAMANA RAO NAIDU, B.A., B.L.,

The education imparted here is on modern and approved lines. The school is a centre of national culture, religion and patriotism.Owing to the untiring work of its selfless Head Master, Mr.K.Rangaswami Aiyangar, and the self-sacrifice of the noble band of teachers that follow his lead, the school is now ranked as one of the few premier institutions in the country, The silent and selfless work that the school has been doing needs to be advertised so that all the support that it needs and deserves amy be forthcoming.

Sri K.Ranagaswami Aiyangar is a teacher in the real sense of the term, inspired by high ideals, a gentleman of high character and a lovable personality. He has been able to impress his character and personality on the students and teachers of the school and to create and develop a sympathetic understanding between the teachers and the taught. The result is the prevalence of a real Gurukula atmosphere in the school.                                                                                               (1936)

The Hon'ble Kumararaja  M.A. MUTHIAH CHETTIAR,  Ex-Minister of Education, Government of Madras

I am glad that, in this school, all that is possible is being done to enable boys to imbible culture and habits that will them honest men and good citizens. The Hindu Theological High School is an admirable institutiton which trains its pupils for life and citizenship. I am very happy that great care in being taken here to teach the pupils the broad and non-sectrarian elements of Hinduism.I have every hope that it will long continue to be a beacon light to all other institutions.                                    (1937)

The Hindu Theological High School is a haven of peace and a home of service. It is a temple . Its great Head Master , Sri K.Ranagaswami Aiyangar, and his coleagues are rendering selfless service to the cause of education on right and the best lines. I have not seen any other school in Tamil Nadu that can be compared to it.                                                          (1937)

Sri RAMANATHA GOENKA, Managing Director,  "The Indian Express."

The school stands as a monument of secondary Education not only in the presidency but in the whole of india.I have visited schools all over the country. I cannnot find a single other institution which comes anywhere near this.It is all due to the zeal and self-sacrificing work of the Head Master and his Colleagues.                                                                           (1939)

Mrs. RUKMINI  LAKSHMIPATHI, B.A.,  Deputy Speaker,  The Madras Legislative Assembly

The one thing which i like most is the very sweet atmosphere that prevails in the school. The mutual love and confidence which subsist between the boys and the teachers deserve to be copied by other schools. I feel that this is the only school which is a type in itself and a model, worthy to be copied by other institutions. I am pleased that everything goes on here so peacefully, so methodically and so regularly.                                                                                                                 (1940)

Rev. A. J. BOYD, M.A., Principal , Madras Christian College

I am glad that the teachers here live up to the ideal of the Gurukula, the central element of which is that a teacher should not merely be an instructor but also a spiritual father and friend of the pupil. I would like to congratulate them on their sincerity, earnestness and vivid sense of duty to the community. The work which they are doing is of incalculable value to the country.

                                                                                                                                                                                   (1940)
